Exercises

The text suggests that stories in the news can be a source of ideas for research. Spend a week monitoring the news (via newspapers, television, the internet) for possible research topics and record any ideas you have.

Another suggestion in the text is to use your everyday experiences as sources for research ideas. Spend a week recording any puzzling or unexpected instances of behavior you encounter (including, if applicable, your own behavior). For each, generate as many kinds of relevant research as you can.

Find a recent article in your preferred area of psychology. Working from your university’s website for either the Institutional Review Board (if the study was with human subjects) or the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (if the study was with animals), prepare the kind of submission for ethical approval that would have preceded the study.

As the text notes, recruitment of an appropriate sample is often one of the most difficult steps in research. Imagine that you wished to recruit the following samples: children of immigrant families who are just starting school in the United States, adolescents who have been treated for eating disorders, and spouses of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease. In each case, write the section of a research proposal that describes how you would go about identifying and recruiting the sample.
